It's about time the Smallville star reprised his famous portrayal of young Clark Kent!
Tom Welling is best known as the young Clark Kent in The CW's Smallville. The hit series ran from 2001 to 2011 and became one of the most popular shows based on a DC character. It was the highest-rated debut for the WB, with a viewership of over 8.4 million.
There is no doubt that Welling was loved and adored by fans in his Clark Kent persona – he looked adorable and kind while still being comfortable with his own strength. In short, he was Superman in every sense of the word.
However, once the TV show came to an end, we never indeed saw him reprise the role of the red-caped superhero. Even though Tom's popularity as young Clark Kent didn't slow down, the producers did not deem it fit to come out with another Smallville TV series or movie.
So, will Tom Welling Superman ever return to the screen?
If we discuss Tom Welling Superman, well, it will take a while because there is so much to talk about Smallville and how it rose to the heights of popularity. Let's start with how Tom Welling got the role that thousands of actors from across America auditioned for.
To start with, know that he turned down the role twice. Yes you read that right, TWICE! Yes, Tom recalls that he was returning from Warner Bros. studio, and he called his manager from a gas station.
While he was on a call with the manager, he was asked to stay on the line, and minutes later, there were seven people on line who, in unison, screamed, "Tom, you got it!"
After the nationwide search for Superman, Welling was finally selected to play the role, but he turned it down two times before accepting it.
He told a source that he chose to play the lead role in the TV show only after reading the script. The pilot finally aired in 2001, and Tom was become a beloved superstar within days!
Tom once shared an incident where he met Brett Ratner to play Clark Kent, aka Superman, in the 2006 superhero film Superman Returns. However, he couldn't go ahead with the opportunity since the schedule of Smallville clashed with the filming of the movie.
After the show ended in 2011, Tom appeared as Clark Kent in Batwoman's episode of the CW Arrowverse crossover event 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' in 2019. His Smallville co-star Erica Durance also reprised her role as Louis Lane in the popular crossover.
That was the only time we got to see him in the role of Clark Kent, which is a hard pill to swallow for the fans since Tom Welling from Smallville was a big deal. When Smallville ended, there were talks that his fame and popularity as Clark Kent will invite many roles as the red-caped crusader. However, it never materialized.
There have always been rumors regarding his appearance as Superman or Clark Kent on major DC shows, including The Flash, but at the end of the day, Welling always denied becoming Clark Kent once again.
The latest revelation regarding our chance to witness him playing Superman is nothing more than Tom's wish to wear the iconic costume for the upcoming Robert Pattinson starrer, The Batman, set to be released on March 4, 2022.
During an interview, Tom cheekily mentioned that his buddy Rob is going to star in the latest version of Batman, and that it would be fun if he could show up as Superman in a scene or two of the movie.
The wish is still a wish, and the fans, more than the man, would want to witness the iconic Tom Welling Superman Suit; yes, we'd love to!
It would require more than wishing upon stars to witness Tom Welling Superman, especially in a costume since Tom had already shown reluctance to play the iconic DC hero when he appeared as Clark Kent in the Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths.
However, after showing eagerness recently to wear the Superman suit in the Batman movie, fans can expect Welling to wear the iconic costume at least once to blow our minds away, even if he meant it as a joke.
Welling, along with his Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor), plans to create an animated reboot of Smallville. It has been presumed that the series will have almost all of the original cast and pick up from where the last episode of the TV show left.
Apart from this, DC Comics had also published 'Smallville Season 11' issues where a version of Batman and Wonder Woman was introduced to the universe, which led to a lot of debate amongst the fans on whether or not it's canon.
Thus, seeing our former TV Clark Kent might remain a dream for all of us, but we would still not want to lose hope on this one. After all, seeing Tom Welling Superman in the red-and-blue suit would be something to see.
Tom Welling is probably best known for playing Clark Kent on Smallville. However, the success of the TV series gave him many fans who grew to love watching Tom Welling movies and TV shows that followed after Smallville.
Before we jump on the actor's filmography, let us get a background check on the life of Tom before he became an actor.
Tom was a high-school athlete who worked in construction before earning an opportunity to model for a men's clothing brand sometime in 1998. From there, he only rose and rose, and continued modeling for several popular brands.
In 2000, he appeared in Angela Via's video "Picture Perfect." He had his first significant role as Rob "Karate Rob" Meltzer, a karate teacher and love interest of Amy Gray in the second season of popular legal drama Judging Amy.
His performance was quite impressive in the show, and perhaps this is why his role was extended for three more episodes. Welling also appeared in the pilot episodes of Special Unit 2 and Undeclared.
Amongst Tom Welling movies and TV shows, his breakout role and breakthrough performance remain in 2001 The WB/CW series Smallville, where he played the role of young Clark Kent and swooned the audience with his to-die-for looks and brilliant acting skills. The superhero drama earned him fame and made him a household name.
His character also won him many awards, including Teen Choice Award (TV) for Male Breakout Star in 2002 and Choice TV Actor in Action, in 2009. He also earned a lot of nominations all through his role as Clark Kent, including Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television (2002–2006), Scream Awards for Best Superhero (2010–2011), Choice TV Actor: Fantasy/Sci-Fi (2010–2011), and Choice TV Actor: Drama (2002, 2005).
He also earned a nomination for his on-screen chemistry with fellow Smallville co-star Kristin Kreuk, who played the role of Lana Lang in the show. Together, they were nominated for the Teen Choice Award for Choice TV: Chemistry in 2006.
The show ended in 2011 after having a good run for a decade. There was no doubt that the show's fans missed their hero and hoped for him to return in some way or the other. However, apart from his appearance as Clark Kent in Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths in 2019, we never saw Tom Welling Superman again, not yet.
After the show ended, Welling never showed up in a leading or concurrent role in a TV show apart from his 17-episode appearance in Lucifer as Lt. Marcus Pierce/Cain, from 2017 to 2018.
Now coming to Tom Welling movies, we can assure you, he has been a part of some great ones. He made his big-screen debut in 2003 comedy, Cheaper by the Dozen, where he played the role of Charlie Baker, who was the second-oldest child of his parents, played by the legendary Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt.
In an interview, Tom revealed that he had three reasons to do the movie – Steve Martin, Steve Martin, and Steve Martin. However, he accepts that he liked his character once he read the script and went ahead with the job.
Cheaper by the Dozen did pretty well at the box-office and gave way to a sequel titled Cheaper by the Dozen 2 in 2005, where he reprised his role as Charlie Baker.
He also starred in 2005 supernatural horror, The Fog, in which he played Nicholas 'Nick' Castle, a role originally played by Tom Alkins in the 1980's movie of the same name. It was a remake of John Carpenter's The Fog.
He also had supporting roles in Parkland (2013), Draft Day (2014), and The Choice (2016).
Apart from being an actor, Welling also wore the director's hat in many episodes of Smallville and worked as an executive producer of shows like Hellcats and Professionals.
