Before you can rip, convert, or copy a commercial DVD, you must have to decrypt and remove the copy protection embedded on the disc. If the protection is not removed, you cannot extract the DVD content.
But DVD ripping programs and DVD copy software typically integrate a DVD decryption technology to help in removing the copy protection from discs. Such techs are referred to as DVD decrypters.
DVDFab HD Decrypter is a professional software program that allows its users to copy, convert, and rip most DVD discs for free. It can remove common DVD protections and it is available for both macOS and Windows OS computers.
Actually, DVDFab HD Decrypter is the free version of DVDFab 12 software. When you download DVDFab 12, you're entitled to a 30-day limited free trial; at the expiration of the free trial, you have to either upgrade to a paid plan to keep enjoying the full features of the software, or you'd be automatically switched to HD Decrypter.
That said, DVDFab HD Decrypter is a cost-free, simplified version of DVDFab 12. It offers all the modules and tools in the full version, which includes DVD Copy, DVD Ripper, Blu-ray Copy, Blu-ray Ripper, and Video Converter. However, as a freeware, it cannot remove all types of DVD protections; it is limited to a few common ones.
Notwithstanding, with DVDFab HD Decrypter, you can copy and rip most DVDs and Blu-ray discs. It also allows you to perform video conversion from one format to another; however, it supports limited formats - unlike the full version with over 150 formats.
To get started with using this freeware, you have to ensure that your PC meets the minimum technical requirements for this program to run smoothly. The technical specifications are listed below.
DVDFab HD Decrypter program is available for Windows OS and macOS computers. Hereunder are the technical specifications for each of the operating systems.

Interestingly, you'd get the same products on the full DVDFab 12 version. The only difference is that you'd be provided with limited features, modes, and formats for each module.
This module lets you rip and convert DVD and Blu-ray discs into digital formats for playback on portable devices or mobile phones. It supports all kinds of DVD/Blu-ray discs (except for adult DVDs and those containing multiple VTS protections), and converts them to common digital formats.
The Copy module allows you to copy or clone DVDs and Blu-ray discs to ISO images or movie folders. It supports lossless 1:1 conversion, and you can burn the copied content to a blank disc.
This module allows you to convert digital videos in-between formats. It supports Enlarger AI (sold differently) for upscaling video images to higher resolution, up to 4k. DVDFab Video Converter is practically the most full-featured video conversion program for Windows and macOS.
With pretty much already said about DVDFab HD Decrypter, hereunder is a detailed guide on how to use the program to rip, copy, or convert DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
First things first, you need to download and install the freeware on your Windows or macOS computer. After the installation is done, launch the application and click on the module you want to use. For example, if you want to rip a DVD/BD, click on the “Ripper” module, and if you want to copy a disc, click on the “Copy” module.
Now on the module of your choice, import the DVD or Blu-ray movie you want to copy, convert or rip. If you choose DVD Copy, only Full Movie and Main Movie modes are available for HD Decrypter users. So, choose from the two modes, and proceed with other actions.
You can adjust some of the DVD movie settings by clicking the “Advanced Settings” icon. If you’re on the “Ripper” module, you can access the built-in video editor by clicking on the “Video Edit” icon.
On the bottom of the interface, you'd see a box beside the "Save To:" text; click on the box and choose where to save the resulting file from your DVD copy or ripping task. After you have selected where to save the video or ISO file, proceed to click the "Start" button, and your DVD copy or DVD ripping task would start immediately.
To view the process in real time, navigate to the "Task Queue" window; here, you can pause and resume the process at any time. However, since HD Decrypter is not the full (paid) version of DVDFab 12, you cannot activate the hardware boost feature to speed up the DVD copy or DVD ripping process.
Notwithstanding, you can rip or copy multiple DVDs at the same time, even with this freeware. You can set your PC to automatically shut down when the process runs completely.
The steps above are the procedures to use DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip or copy DVDs. However, it is important to note that HD Decrypter cannot read certain protected DVDs, and does not support DVDFab’s GPU boost technologies because it is a freeware.
Yes, after your DVDFab 12 trial expires, or your subscription duration has elapsed, you'd be switched to HD Decrypter, and it is completely free for a lifetime - but with limited features, copy modes, and DVD conversion formats.
Check the technical specifications and ensure that your PC meets the specified requirements. If your system meets the requirements and yet the software isn't working on your PC, contact DVDFab support.
The freeware is available for download on the main webpage. You can also get it from websites that provide software package files; sites like FileHorse, Cnet, and the likes.
