TraceRouteOK

A small and easy to work with application that enables network administrators and regular users to trace the path that packets follow over the Internet or the LAN.

TraceRouteOK comes in handy to any user who wants to trace the path of the data that is transferred throughout the local network or the packets that are sent over the Internet. It can act as a network connection diagnostics tool, worth including in any administrator's toolkit.

A portable and lightweight alternative to the tracert command

Its footprint on the system is very small, so it won't occupy a lot of storage space. Moreover, TraceRouteOK is portable, which means that it does not require installation and can be launched directly from a removable drive, without affecting the system registry in any way.

The application does nothing more than execute are traceroute operation, offering an obviously better alternative to the 'tracert' command that can be launched from the Windows console. That is, thanks to the user-friendly interface and the intuitive options that makes it very easy to work with.

Trace the route of your data packets

In order to use TraceRouteOK to track down the path that sent and received data packets travel, you only have to enter the desired host or IP address and press the 'Enter' key. The application then analyzes the route of the transferred data, displaying the retrieved information within an organized table.

It shows you the IP address and the corresponding host name for each node, while also determining the transit delays of the transmitted packet across the Internet Protocol network. The list can be exported to HTML format and saved locally.

The 'Settings' menu enables you to modify the host and the ping requests timeout, as well as the maximum number of hops and the number of ping requests per host.

A handy and user-friendly traceroute application

Delivered inside a lightweight package, TraceRouteOK helps administrators analyze network connections and provide information about the data route. Optimized for speed, this small utility outputs a list of the traversed nodes and delay information, which makes it a worth-having tool for any network admin.

Pingnoo

Analyze network connections in detail using real-time graphical representations of connections in all the nodes along a packet's pathway.

Traceroute is one of the common commands network administrators use in their daily activity. With its help, they can follow a packet’s route to its destination and report the IP addresses of all the routers it pings. Moreover, it is the simplest means of assessing the network latency, meaning the time a packet takes to transit from source to destination.

While traceroute is usually run by network admins via the command console, there are dedicated applications that allow you to track down a packet and measure its transit delay from a more user-friendly GUI. That is the case with Pingnoo.

Monitor the network latency in real time

Released under an open-source license, Pingnoo is a network connection analysis tool whose purpose is to facilitate the analysis of a packet’s route in real time, allowing users to measure the latency in each of the nodes it reaches.

The application’s interface is pretty intuitive, but there are a few functions that are not yet implemented, as Pingnoo is in its early development stages.   The route analyzer displays a table where you can see all the hops a packet goes through, along with the number of packets that reached it, the corresponding IP address and the router’s name. Pingnoo displays the total delay from the first node to the last, along with the average, the minimum, the maximum and the current latency.

Right below, Pingnoo displays real time evolution graphs for each of the nodes. Each graph is automatically updated and contains the latency (in milliseconds) of a packet over time. Unfortunately, there are not options to zoom in the graph or save it to your computer for reference. In fact, no exporting option is implemented at the moment.

Promising visual traceroute monitoring tool

What is interesting about Pingnoo is that it can record the latency history for each of the nodes, displaying the values in a graph that is updated in real time. The visual representation surely helps administrators and others easily spot a problem and promptly respond, if necessary. However, its development is in progress and there is a long way to go before it becomes a full-featured application, ready to use by professionals.

SmartWhois

Look up whois information anytime you need to with this application, using the IP address, the host name, or the domain as the search criteria.

Looking up the information pertaining to a certain website is something that is readily available to everyone. All they need to do is look up that site's address on a service such as "whois", revealing data about the site owner and other such details.

Why desktop alternatives exist to a solution available on a site, however, is mostly in the name of convenience. It is due to such a thing that an app like SmartWhois exists — add in domains, IP addresses, or hostnames in batch files, and export that information in notepad.

The detail in a simple layout

SmartWhois doesn't take much figuring out. There's a search bar near the upper part of its layout, where you can put in the IP, host, or domain of the desired address, and the app will fetch what intel it finds for that query.

The information is then presented in an orderly fashion: if you queried a domain name, the app will tell you its corresponding IP, and the country it hails from. Should it be uncovered, contact information to reach the administrator, or any other such person, will also be presented to you. DNS info and an Alexa Traffic Rank, if available, would additionally be featured.

When the app queries a host, IP, or domain, it's not certain that it will find all of the data available on it — there are cases when there is none.

Import from batch text files

You can add in the sites you want to find more about in a simple text file, feed it into SmartWhois, and it'll look all of them up, grouping them for easier access. Available to users is also the capability to export the results under a text file.

If you ever want to find certain domain info about a site, you can give this app a shot. While the processing time to fetch the info could be improved, you won't mind it when SmartWhois finds what you wanted.
